"Live, work and play." The three words are a pet phrase of urban planners, developers and politicians. They have even started surfacing as leaders describe efforts to turn The Esplanade mall in Kenner from a struggling 1980s-era shopping center to a vibrant commerce hub.
What exactly does "live, work and play" mean when it comes to redeveloping The Esplanade?
Najla Kayyem, vice president of marketing for Pacific Retail Capital Partners, the California-based group that bought the mall in September, was hesitant to dive into details prematurely, but confirmed in an email the company has enlisted the help of Gensler, a San Francisco design and architecture firm, to explore a wide range of uses for the property, including multi-family housing, hotel, retail, restaurant and entertainment components.
