University of New Orleans students who want to start their own businesses can get free help on campus in what is described as a business-accelerator program. Each participant will get professional one-on-one coaching and emerge with a strategy.
The Urban Entrepreneurship Program is competitive. The first class of nine, who will graduate this month, were chosen from about 70 applicants, said John Williams, interim dean of UNO's College of Business Administration.
This is not a program where students sit around and formulate ideas, he said.
Prospective students "have got to come forward with a fairly concrete idea that we take and run along with them," he said. "We're looking for someone who has done a lot of hiomework."
The initiative, which does not offer course credit, was formed with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation of Kansas City, Mo., whose personnel help lead the UNO program.
Although the class graduating this month worked for six months, administrators are considering extending it to nine months. The next group will start in the fall through the AT&T Entrepreneurship Center in UNO's Kirschman Hall.
