A state Senate committee on Monday approved a measure to bring back the three tax holidays that were suspended to save the state money but consolidate them on a single weekend in July.
Previously, one sales tax holiday exempted purchases from state and local sales taxes, while the other two allowed local governments to opt in, though only one parish did. Under Senate Bill 234, locals would be able to opt in or out but would not be able to offer a state sales tax holiday without agreeing to exempt their tax dollars, which makes it a hard sell for local governments.
