Owners of short-term rental properties in New Orleans could see a jump in their property tax bills next year under rules being developed by the Louisiana Tax Commission and Orleans Parish Assessor Erroll Williams.

The rules would classify homes rented to tourists through sites like Airbnb as commercial properties.

The plan, initiated by the Tax Commission, could see taxes on some short-term rentals jump by nearly 50 percent, potentially enough to cause some owners to think twice when deciding whether to rent a home to a long-term tenant or list it for tourists on sites like Airbnb.
