Louisiana spends at least $1.79 billion per year on incentives to companies, newspaper reports

Louisiana spends at least $1.79 billion per year -- about 21 cents for every dollar in the state budget -- on tax breaks and other incentives to companies, a slice of the more than $80 billion that states and municipalities award annually, The New York Times reported Sunday. In Louisiana, that breaks down to $394 per person, according to the newspaper, which reviewed more than 150,000 incentives and compiled the data into a searchable database. Overall, Texas topped the list, awarding more than $19 billion in incentives each year.
