Louisiana Senate will consider paid medical and family leave funded by new tax

A Senate committee on Thursday advanced a proposal that would require Louisiana businesses to offer employees temporary paid leave to deal with family or medical issues.

Senate Bill 186 would create a fund similar to the state’s worker compensation fund that would be paid for by a new tax.

To make it work, the legislature would pass a separate bill imposing a payroll tax of 0.064 percent, with employees covering 55 percent of the cost and employers paying 45 percent. Tax bills must originate in the state House of Representatives.
