Louisiana flood victims can claim refunds for state sales taxes paid on clothing, furniture, electronics and other items that were destroyed by the floodwaters. Refunds are available only for damaged property not covered by insurance or disaster relief funds.

The Louisiana Department of Revenue said in a Friday (Aug. 26) news release that refunds are available for flood victims who lost property after severe storms and flooding in August as well as earlier this year in March. Eligible taxpayers must live in a parish declared a federal disaster area after one or both of the flooding events.

The state said it will refund the value of the sales tax paid on the original purchase of the destroyed property. Victims will not be able to get a refund for sales taxes paid on replacement property, according to the release.

Only individuals are eligible for refunds. Property owned by corporations, partnerships or any type of business does not qualify.
