BATON ROUGE -- A little-noticed provision in the federal tax cut bill would provide a tax break for families of private school students, and Louisiana lawmakers are moving to take advantage of the offer.
At least five state House and Senate members, including one from Houma, are pushing bills that would expand the state’s popular program for college savings, Student Tuition Assistance and Revenue Trust. Under the change, the same savings plan and tax breaks would be allowed for parents paying tuition and other expenses at private and parochial elementary and secondary schools.
However, the Legislature has to pass a law to make it happen.
